Modern bohemian womenswear.
Spell has been a Certified B Corporation since 2024. The brand publicly lists all Tier 1 manufacturing partners (referring to the final garment factories that cut and sew the clothing). And traces most of its supply chain beyond this stage and reports that almost all production partners are mapped.
More than half of its final stage production is covered by recognised ethical audit standards, including SMETA, SA8000, BSCI and WRAP. These audits assess areas such as working conditions, health and safety, hours, wages and worker rights. Spell’s Code of Conduct aligns with the International Labour Organisation’s core principles, which prohibit forced labour and child labour. 100% of their Tier 1 partners have signed this code of conduct. Spell ensures some workers in the final production stage are paid living wage although this is not verified across the entire supply chain. Spell publishes an annual Modern Slavery Statement and states it has not identified cases within its supply chain to date.
The brand also partners with Fair Trade artisan groups, including SETU in India. These projects support traditional craftsmanship and provide paid work through certified Fair Trade initiatives.
Spell prioritises lower impact materials across most of its collections. In 2024, 90.4% of total fibres used were classified as preferred fibres. These include GOTS certified organic cotton, linen, hemp, and certified wood based fibres such as LENZING™ ECOVERO™ and TENCEL™ Lyocell. A growing share of materials comes from recycled or regenerated sources, including recycled cotton and recycled synthetics used where durability or performance is required.
The brand has introduced several initiatives to reduce waste and resource use. Spell Salvage allows customers to return garments for repair, reuse or recycling, while reSpell supports resale and longer product life. Spell also partners with rental platforms to encourage shared ownership.
On the production side, the brand uses digital sampling and digital printing, which reduces fabric waste, water use and chemical inputs compared to traditional methods. Spell is Climate Active certified carbon neutral for its business operations (Not including supply chain. Product level emissions are still being measured).
They release yearly impact reports for those wanting further information.
Spell does use leather and wool. These make up under 5% of the brand’s total fibre use.
Spell states that all leather is sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG) certified tanneries, which assess environmental and chemical management in leather processing. Wool used by the brand is primarily Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified, which covers animal welfare and land management practices.
Spell doesn’t seem to use exotic animal skins.
