Contemporary clothing featuring First Nations artworks

Made in Australia
First Nations Owned
Natural Fibres
Magpie Goose is an Aboriginal-owned fashion label that collaborates with First Nations artists to turn their artwork into clothing and accessories. Each collection features licensed artworks, with artists paid for their work and credited across the garments and product pages. The brand creates colourful everyday pieces including dresses, shirts and accessories designed to share culture and storytelling through fashion. Garments are produced in Australia using natural fibres such as cotton and linen, with small production runs rather than mass manufacturing. The aesthetic is vibrant and distinctive, with prints that are immediately recognisable.

Meet the Founder(s)

Magpie Goose began in 2015 as a social enterprise founded by Laura Egan and Maggie McGowan, with the goal of creating fashion that shares Aboriginal stories and provides fair opportunities for First Nations artists. The brand works by licensing artworks from Aboriginal artists and transforming them into textiles and clothing, ensuring artists are credited and paid for their designs. In 2021, the business transitioned to 100% Aboriginal ownership and leadership and is now run by Amanda Hayman (Wakka Wakka and Kalkadoon) and Troy Casey (Kamilaroi). The pair run the brand as a family business and continue its original mission: supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, creating meaningful employment opportunities, and using fashion as a way to share culture and stories with a wider audience.

Brand Values

People

Magpie Goose places strong emphasis on social impact and cultural respect. The brand works in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, licensing their artworks and ensuring artists are paid and credited for their designs. This model supports artists and communities while helping share First Nations culture and stories through fashion.

The business also operates as a social enterprise and is now 100% Aboriginal owned and led. Beyond artist collaborations, the brand focuses on creating employment opportunities and community partnerships. Magpie Goose has worked with refugee employment programs and social enterprises, helping support skills development and job opportunities in the local community.

Many garments are made in Australia through Ethical Clothing Australia accredited manufacturers, which verifies that workers across the local supply chain are paid fairly and work in safe conditions. These partnerships allow the brand to maintain greater transparency and oversight of working conditions compared with offshore manufacturing.

Environment

Magpie Goose focuses on reducing environmental impact through natural fibres, local production and waste reduction. Garments are made in Australia and use 100% natural fibres, including cotton, linen and Tencel. These materials are chosen to avoid synthetic fabrics and create garments that can break down more naturally at the end of their life. Many textiles are also hand screen-printed with water-based inks.

Production is kept intentionally small. The brand positions itself as an alternative to fast fashion, creating limited collections designed to be worn for many years. Fabric offcuts from production are reused rather than discarded. Some are turned into “no-waste” accessories, while others are repurposed through partnerships with social enterprises that transform textile scraps into new products. Packaging is also considered, with orders shipped using recyclable materials where possible.

Good On You rates Magpie Goose “Good” overall, with an environment score of 3/5. The rating highlights the use of lower-impact materials and waste reduction efforts, but notes there is no clear evidence of actions to reduce hazardous chemicals or greenhouse gas emissions across the supply chain. The brand has also received industry recognition, including Gold for Best Sustainable Womenswear at the 2024 Clean + Conscious Awards.

Animals

The brand does not appear to use animal-derived materials in its clothing, although it does not make any formal claims of being vegan.
